The human beings we have taken charge damaging us as to put in imminent danger many species of animals everywhere of the world, for do not mention those that already have become extinct product of the destruction of his habitat and the imbalance of the food chains caused by the wrong interaction of the man who by means of the hunt, the felling or the pollution they have altered significantly the possibility of life for many animal species that try to survive in the middle of this drama of which all of us are guilty. For such a motive also we are persons in charge of doing something for his protection.

The Condor:

Anicsi cóndor hembra, mascota del Centro de Visitantes MucunturiaHe is along the Andes, and in Venezuela it is possible to find specifically in the Andean Mountain chain and in Perijá's Saw. More impressive bird of the American Andes is the Condor (Vultur gryphus) that belongs to the order of the Falconiformes and to the family Cathartidae whose members are characterized for feeding almost exclusively on carrion.

The Condor is a big monogamous and sedentary bird with certain night habits. His head is nake of pens and the macho differs easily from the female for his comb or caruncle that goes on the forehead and part of the beak; in addition the macho is of major size and has the iris of the eye of brown yellowish color whereas that of his companion is reddish; his vision is really extraordinary.

His beak is stout with hook apical and cutting edges; it has a voluminous maw that stands out on having filled; it has robust enough legs, strong fingers but with blunt relatively weak nails. His young woman's plumage is of dun color ocráceo and to adult it belongs in general to black bluish color and shows a necklace of white down and big you stain also white in the ends of the wings.

An adult macho can manage to weigh approximately 12 kilos and to measure from the end of the beak to the end of the tail 1.30 meters; his importance in flight can reach 3.50 meters and fly on approximately 7000 meters of height and in climatic favorable conditions to support the flight during certain time to approximately 55 Km / hour.

You threaten: the extinction of the big Latin-American mammals and the reduction of species like deer and dantas have contributed in the wastage of the populations of these predators. Additional, in from the period of conquest he has been affected by the hunt and even the sports hunt.

One feeds, as other species of vultures, exclusively on carrion, that is to say, dead animals. His more developed sense is the sight, which allows him to locate the food from the heights.
His body is adapted to consume meat in condition of decomposition; it possesses the nake head that facilitates his cleanliness, you stop big without claws to hold the food against the soil, a powerful beak to break the leather of the corpses and a digestive system that allows him to take advantage of them without falling ill. At present due to the decrease of the wild populations, it feeds mainly of copies of introduced species that die for different reasons.

At the edge of the extinction:

One finds our Andean condor, erroneously she has been considered to be a predator. They are a victim of poisoning for lead on having consumed remains of animals hunted with firearms, poisoning on having consumed remains consciously poisoned by the man to exterminate predators as lifted dogs; he dies for shots due to the ignorance of the species, break of the eggs for effects of the DDT accumulated in the rinds of the same ones and to the compilation of eggs and pigeons for the private collections and of museums.

It is important to know the following tips:

* The condor does not hunt.

* The condor clean the environment.

* The condor is monogamous for life

* The condor weighs 9 to 15 kilograms

* The condor lives to age 75.

* The statue located in Pico El Aguila is a condor and the site formerly called the Collado del Condor.

* The shield of Mérida and those of Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Chile condors look as key elements of its design.

For its role as scavenger is an important part in balancing ecosystems as part and is very useful for the health of many animals, because by eating the corpses quickly eliminates contact sources of disease or sources of contamination. So you have to prevent their disappearance.

There is a hunter, and has no strong claws that are needed to capture and kill. Unlike the eagle, can not take an animal with its legs.

The decline of the condor to the ground, warning others about the probable existence of food and so is that many tend to congregate on carrion.

Overnight condor refuge in caves in the mountains. Only when there is no wind flap, and when they go off. As if any, plan and make a flap from time to time.

One of the most striking events in Patagonia is to see the high and glider flight of the condor. (It is using thermals, currents of hot air, which combined with its aerodynamic wing structure, make up).

The size and majesty of this bird catches the attention of observers
.

NATURAL HABITAT

The Andean condor is located throughout the mountain range of the Andes from Venezuela and Colombia to the Strait of Magellan, and sometimes reaches down to the Pacific coast, to the colonies of water birds to feed
their eggs.
It feeds on dead animals found near their habitat. It feeds on dead animals, by first extracting the heart. It is carnivorous and scavenger.
And they can endure days without food.
In the province of Mendoza, at the "The Aguaditas" an extension of 2.500 hectares, tourists and those interested can watch the condors.

PLAY

The nest is located in inaccessible places: in a crevice or cave in the rocks, does not devote time to its construction.

The female usually lays a single egg white, about 10 cm. long.
Incubation lasts about 55 days, the male and female take turns to warm the egg.

The young, at birth, are very weak and are covered by a whitish gray down. Parents place to eat easily digestible food, softened and warmed in the crop. They remain more than a year in the nest. Breeding takes 2 years to reach full maturity. Lays its eggs between September and October.
It makes its nest in poorly accessible places that jealously because their habitat has been modified and the copies have declined dramatically.

The condor is in danger of extinction due to man's progress on their territories.

In Mendoza it is raising artificially the eggs are placed in incubators, and once you are born you feed through puppets mimicking her mother.

Few birds can match the mighty condor, who lives 70 years (if the man leaves), displaying their beauty for our Andes.

* El cóndor NO caza.
* El cóndor limpia el ambiente.
* El cóndor es monógamo de por vida
* El cóndor pesa de 9 a 15 kilogramos
* El cóndor vive hasta los 75 años de edad.
* La estatua situada en Pico El Águila es un cóndor y antiguamente  el sitio se llamó el Collado del Cóndor.
* El escudo del Estado Mérida y los de Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia y Chile lucen cóndores como elementos principales de su diseño.
